APPLEBY / OATES / IRETON Connection in Ross Twp., Renfrew Co., Ontario

John APPLEBY was one of six siblings who emigrated from Coolkenna, Shillelagh, Co. Wicklow, Ireland. There were four sisters who were married in Ireland and emigrated with their husbands and children. The two brothers were younger and were married in Canada.

John APPLEBY 1822 - 20SEP1872 married Jane GILES about 1852, and they were enumerated in Ross Twp in 1861. Records indicate some of their children born Drummond Twp, Lanark Co, and one in Carleton Co.

Richard OATES was born 4JAN1836 in Coolkenna, Co Wicklow and was baptized 10JAN1836. He came to Canada with his parents John OATES 1806-1884 and Sarah APPLEBY 1807-1852. I am not sure when Richard settled on Queensline, Ross Twp, the earliest census I have found for him was 1881, but the obituary of his son, William John (Jack) indicates that he was born on Queensline in 1870.

In any event Richard OATES was at L15 C 7 on the Queensline and his uncle John APPLEBY was at C6 L13 on the Blindline.

Richard OATES had five children, but all except William John (Jack) 1870-1936, died one summer from an epidemic of dysentery.

William John OATES had seven sons and two daughters, many of whom lived their lives on Queensline.

John APPLEBY had six children and some of their descendants are still in the area.

Richard OATES sister Ellen OATES 1840-1902 married 12APR1860 Thomas IRETON 1829-1888. They had 10 children. Their 4th child John IRETON also moved to Queensline. He lived on L7 C9 which he first rented, then bought from Mr. FREELAND. John was able to buy this farm with the help of his uncle Richard OATES.

John IRETON had six children, with some descendants still in the area.

In summary there were, John APPLEBY (1822-1872), and his nephew Richard OATES (1836-1908), and his nephew John IRETON (1867-1948). All three had connections in Lanark Co.
