      !OCCUPATION: HEADMASTER OF BOYS' SCHOOL ON THE CENTRAL HARPUR SITE, 1875-1911 WAS CHOSEN FROM 94 APPLICANTS. 'NO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAD, OR NOW HAS,A MORE CAPABLE HEAD THAN OLD G.M.T.' A REDOUBTABLE CHARACTER, HE WAS IN APPEARANCE SHORT AND SOMEWHAT STOUT-'A LITTLE LIKE EDWARD VII' COMPACT OF ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM, AND A BRILLIANT TEACHER.SOMETHING OF HIS AURA COMES THROUGH EVEN IN OFFICIAL MINUTES. HE WAS VERY STRICT AND VERY FAIR. CHARACTERISTICALLY HE BROUGHT ON HIS DEATH BY CYCLING UP A HILL. G.M.T.Bates and his school here. He was headmaster of Harpur Trust Boys Elementary Scho and so strong was his association with it that it was frequently referred to as "Bates' School". The school had begun life as Harpur Trust General Perparatory School in Shire Hall in 1815, moving to its Horne Lane premise s in 1818 and becoming Harpur Trust Boys Elementary in 1874. In 1903 Bedfordshire County Council took over management of the school, as with most others in the county as Local Education Authority (following the Educati on Act of 1902).
