EGANVILLE (Special) - Charles R. Lett, 68, First World War veteran and prominent official of the Canadian Legion, died recently in Pembroke Hospital.
He was born on a Wilberforce farm, son of the late Thomas Lett and Elizabeth Searson. He enlisted in 1915 with the Third Seaforth Highlanders and later served with the 77th Regiment. He was twice wounded, the last time at Vimy Ridge, and was invalided home for hospitalization in Toronto.
After the war he took over the family farm. His first wife, Edith Davis of Rankin, died in 1925. They had one daughter who died in infancy.
In 1929 he married Alice Leech of Wilberforce, who survives.
During the Second World War, he supplied large quantities of meat for the armed forces. He was the first president of the Eganville branch of the Canadian Legion and was Zone Commander of Zone 7. He was the chief promoter of a community centre here and until last year was chairman of the annual winter carnival
