Notes - MURIEL MILLICENT "PENNY" BLACK Peacefully, on February 20, 2001, Millice nt passed away at the Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg. Millicent was b orn on July 13, 1903 in Cobden, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husba nd James Leybourne "Ley" Black in 1975; her parents, John Evans Ross and M argaret Elizabeth Ross; two brothers, Arnold and Hilton; a sister Hildr ed Ross Graham and a brother-in-law Rev. James R. Graham. She is surviv ed by her step-son R. Greer Black; daughter-in-law Kerry Toll; two grandda ughters, Devon and Tallan Black, and two nieces June and Rosemary Graha m. Her family moved to Winnipeg when she was a baby. She received her educ ation at Mulvey School, Wesley College and the University of Manitoba. Lat er, she studied music and French at Mont Notre Dame French Ladies Colle ge in Sherbrooke, Quebec. She also studied crafts at McMaster University ( Hamilton) and the Pentlands School of Crafts, Pentlands, North Carolina. M illicent had an extensive and varied career. Her work included camp and ho tel manager in northern Ontario, she served in the CWAC as an Auxiliary Se rvice Officer in Ottawa during the Second World War and as a crafts lead er with the Montreal YWCA after the war. She returned to Ontario to care f or her elderly father in 1948 and worked as a social worker for the Ontar io Government in Toronto. She moved back to the west in 1956 to marry L ey and worked for the Childrens Aide Society of Western Manitoba in Brando n. After they moved to Winnipeg in 1964, she worked at the D. A. Stewart R ehabilitation Centre, again teaching crafts. Throughout her life she touch ed and helped many people in her different careers. Millicent was a long t ime member of First Presbyterian Church in Winnipeg and a member of the Or der of the Eastern Star, Friendship Chapter No. 67. A memorial service wi ll be held in the chapel at the Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Avenu e, at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23. In lieu of flowers, donations m ay be made to First Presbyterian Church (Winnipeg), the Pastoral Care Depa rtment of Riverview Health Centre or the charity of your choice.
