Notes - From Cobden then & Now p. 17:
John Rankin became a merchant and hotel keeper at Cobden. He was an associate of Jason Gould and was one of teh directors of the Horton & ross Plank and Macadamized Road Co.
He owned abt a dozen lots on the eastern side of Bonnechere St. in Cobden. in 1852 he bought a hotel which had been recently constructed by Mr. Laycock (lot 14). A couple years later he bought Bisson's Hotel which was next door (lot13) and opened a store in it.
He was Reeve of Ross Twp 1862-1867; Warden of RC 1865-1866. Twp meetings were held in his hotel until a twp hall ws built on lot 30 or 31. He became 1st federal MP for RC defeating Thomas Murray.
He sold his hotel to Thomas Hill; his store to Robert Delahey and moved to Bowmanville
