506 ..Cobden of the Past
Cobden has lost the last surviving WWII veteran in our town. Edison Dow Stairs, (1924-2023), was 6 days shy of his 99th birthday. Ed retired from a long military service in 1974. He moved to Cobden in 1976 with his wife Shirley nee Cobb & family. She was a Cobden girl, and they had married, in 1950. I have many memories of Ed and I'm sure most Cobden folks would as well. He adopted Cobden wholeheartedly as his home and participated in all aspects of community life - sports, volunteering, organizations, etc. Ed was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 550 (Cobden). He was an avid curler and golfer. I remember the mini put he built, and would assemble it in his driveway from time to time. He was creative and liked to build things. Ed volunteered in the school, seniors events, church and Legion life; and he was a great story teller. He was fondly known as "Eddie Steps". I most remember him for his love of singing. He loved to sing - by himself and in choirs. Thank you for your service. You will be missed.
