1451 Renfrew Mercury April 4 1924 Obituary Mrs Wilson Blackwell from Cobden Sun Mar 20th, 1924 So when my latest breath Shall rend the veil in twain By death I shall escape from death And life eternal gain. It was with deeply saddened hearts that the large congregation in Grace Me thodist church, Cobden, sang these words during the funeral service of M rs Wilson Blackwell of Wolftown last Sat aft. Although only ill for a sho rt period of four weeks, her death was a great shcock to everyone. Duri ng the short illness her constitution orapidly weakened and in spite of a ll that kind hands could do she passed away at her home on Thursday, Mar ch 13th. The late Mrs Wilson Blackwell, whose maiden name was Emily McInt yre, was born in Douglas forty-nine years ago and was a dau of late Mr a nd Mrs Sam McIntyre. In that place she spent her girlhood days and abt tw enty-five years ago she became the wife of Wilson Blackwell and they resid ed on a farm in Bromley twp Their home was known by all for its air ofki nd hospitality and ever pleasing welcome which greeted all callers. Decea sed was a woman highly esteemed by a host of friends and during her ilne ss she bore her suffering, with Christian fortitude. She was a loving a nd faithful wife and a tender mother. Althoug she will be sadly missed t he life she lived in her home and wherever she went was such as to lea ve an influence that will be as a guiding voice. Her kind and sympathet ic disposition won for her the highest respect and admiration. She w as an ardent sympathizer in church work and was a member of the Presbyteri an church. She leaves to mourn her loss her sorrowing husband and a fami ly of four : Sam late of San Francisco but now at home; Bernice, Kenne th and Marjorie all at home. Sam was not able to reach home before she pa ssed away but arrived for the funeral. Deceased is also survived by four b rothers and four sisters namely: Mrs David Stewart, Renfrew, Mrs Nina? Ro ss, Eganville, Mrs Martha McLaren?, Los Angelos; Miss Bell? McIntyre Nor th Dakota; Herbert? J?, Cleveland; Dan?? at Johannesburg, South Africa; S am at North Dakota; and James at Hamilton. The funeral service was he ld in Grace Methodist Church on Sat Aft Mar 15th and was conducted by h er pastor Rev A donaldson, assisted by rev E D Mitchell. The church was p acked as people of all classes paid thier last tribute to one so deeply lo ved. The hymns sung during the service were: For ever with the Lord; Near er My God in Thee; and Rock of aGes. Mrs W A Dack sang an appropriate sol o: No Night There. and the choir sang a selection. Rev Mr Donaldson preac hed an impressive serman .... (unable to make out the remainder includi ng pallbearers names.)

1452 Renfrew Mercury Aug 22 1924 paper Mrs. John Johnston died at her home in Horton on Wed August 20th after a c omparatively short illness. The deceased lady was born in Co Kerry, Irela nd, in 1840 and came to Canada when abt 21 years of age, settling in Hort on Twp. Abt 4 years later she married the late John Johnston and settl ed on the farm whre she has resided up until the time of her death. The l ate Mrs. Johnston led an ative life and could read the finest print witho ut the aid of glasses up until within a few weeks of her death. Her husba nd adn one son, Thomas B., predeceased her. Five sons and three dau survi ve: They are James B of Hannah Alberta; John S of Peace River, Alt a; W R of Spencerville, On; Rolland of Latchford On; F H at home; Mrs. Jam es Humphries of Horton; Mrs. John Haggerty of Kemney, Man; and Mrs. Herb H umphries of Brandon, Man. The funeral was held on Fri and sevices were co nducted by REv Mr Bishop of Haleys. The pall bearers were three sons, Jam es Humphries, a son-in-law, and Carol and John Humphries, granadosn. 1453 REnfrew Mercury Feb 22 1924 The death has occured of Edgar C O'Brien of Pembroke, a highly respected c itizen of that town. The late Mr O'Brien was born in Westmeath in the ye ar 1869 and lived there until eight years of age when he moved wiht his pa rents, the late John and Elziabeth O'Brien, to Greenwood, where he resid ed until the year 1914 when he moved to Pembroke. He was married 27 yea rs ago to Miss Jeany M Campbell, dau of the late Alex and Mrs Campbe ll of Pembroke. To this union six children were born, three of whom survi ve. In the year 1912 his wife died. He married in 1915 Miss Bertha M And erson, youngest dau of Mr and Mrs D M Anderson of Beachburg. To this uni on four children were born - three boys and one girl. Two little boys, We ldon and Charlie died abt two years ago. Edgar O'Brien was wellknown in t he Pembroke neighbourhood, being engaged in business that brought him dai ly into the omes of the people. On Jan 30th he caught a cold which develo ped into pneumonia and notwith standing all that medical skill cou ld do he gradually grew weaker in body, but ever conscious and talking a bt his hope and faith in his God. He lingered until Thursday night, Feb 7 th. There are left to mourn his loss his wife and children Freeda, Edna, E mma, Grace and Woodrow. The funeral took place on Sunday aft Feb 10th fr om his late residence, Pembroke St E to the Methodist cem. Service was co nducted at the house by the REv M Ball, assisted by Mr Waine. also had one dated Apr 3 1974 William J Thompson of Calabogie died in Victoria Hospital, Renfrew, March 16, 1974. He was 94. He was born Aug 15, 1879 at Douglas, son of the late George Thompson and his wife the late Elizabeth Morrow. Mr. Thompson was educated in Douglas and was the oldest parishioner at the Most Precious Blood Church, Calabogie. He was predeceased by his first wife Jennie Dick and is survived by his second wife, Mary McCauly, only one son John of Arnprior, one dau Mrs Orvil Bradley (Mary) Funeral arrangements were made by the Goulet Funeral Home. Mr Thompson rested at the McPhail and Perkins Funeral Home for celebration of Eucharist at the Church of the Most Precious Blood, Calabogie Mar 18, 19 74 at 10 am. Rev D J Harrington conducted the service. Rev G Neville w as presented in the sanctuary. Spring interment will be held in the Douglas Cemetery.

1459 Renfrew Mercury Mar 29 1889 from Cobden News Mar 25 1889 Mrs Robert Haley, Cobden, died on Thursday last of dropsy; and was buri ed on Saturday. The funeral, whcih was very largely attended, was from h er late residence. She sleeps her last sleep in the little church-yard ne ar Mr Crozier's below Haley's station. "So he giveth his beloved sleep ." 1460 Renfrew Mercury Mar 7 1924 The death occurred in teh Cottage hospital at Pembroke on Monday of Mr No ah J O'Brien of Watertown. , New York. who cmae over abt a month ago to at tend the funeral of his brother the late Edgar O'Brien of Pembroke. The v isitor from Watertown had suffered from influenza last winter and had n ot been quite himself since. His final illness lasted abt a week; his hea rt gave out, and he died at the age of 60 years. He was native of Westmea th, a son of the late John O'Brien and his wife Elizabeth Jackson, the lat ter of whom pssed away in Nov 1923. The late Noah J O'Brien lived in West meath until a boy of 13 years; the family then removed to Greenwood. Dece ased leaves a wife, one son and two dau all in Watertown. The son is Eber t; the dau Mrs Roby Holden and Miss Myrtle. There are also tow brothers a nd three sisters John in Pembroke, Alex in Ohio, Mrs P Thrasher of Maple A ve, Pembroke, Mrs Charles Whitmore, of Greenwood; Mrs D R MacDonald of Adm aston. 1462 REnfrew Mercury not sure of day Mr T Guest of town received a telegram last Thursday, announcing the dea th of Mrs Wm Hodgins, of Edmonton; and until a few years ago a reside nt of teh Northcote section of this county. The Edmonton Bulletin of Mond ay, says: Yesterday the sad news was brought to town announcing the sudd en death of Mrs Elizabeth Hodgins, of Sunnyside. During the evening the d eceased apparently was in perfect health. It was therefore a great sho ck to her friends when she expired at midnight. Death of Mr A K Devine - Although Mr Andrew Kenny Devine, late of the P. O. Department, Ottawa, had been in poor health for some months, his dea th came almost suddenly on Saturday last, at Osceola, where he had been re siding sicnce his illness with his brother Rev. Father Devine. The deceas ed was the fourth son of teh late Andrew Devine and was 39 yeasrs of ag e. High Mass was sung in the church at Osceola on Monday morning, and th en the remains were brought on to Renfrew by the afternoon CPR express, co nveyed to the church of St Francis Xavier, whre there was a funeral servi ce and then taken for interment to the Roman Catholic Cemetery here. The re was a large attendance of sympathising friends of the family.

1464 Renfrew Mercury Oct 17 1924 The death of Mrs John A Mayhew of Admaston on Thursay evening, 9th inst w as shockingly sudden. Her illness was of abt only 24 hours duration, f or it was on the previous evening that she fell ill, a stroke of paralys is having come. She lay in an unconscious state during the 234 hours, una ble to speak or move before passing away. Seven years before when visiti ng in the West,a similiar illness came to her but she recovered and enjoy ed excellent health to the last. Her sudden death at teh comparatively ea rly age of 54 years came as a heavy blow to the family and caused much sor row in teh community. She enjoyed the acquaintance and esteem of a lar ge circle of people evidence of which was shown at the funeral on Sun a ft when a very large number of pople gathered. There were 169 automobil es in the cortege and many horse-drawn vehicles. Floral tibutes were exce ptionally numerous, including wreaths from teh Renfrew Masonic Lodge, Map le Hill club of the UFWO and the Young People's League of REnfrew Methodi st Church, Admaston Twp Council, and from Moore and Co. of Glendale, Calif ornia in whose service Joseph E on of the sons is. Pall-bearers were Dunc an Stewart of Douglas, P H Bolger, Claude King and G F Cardiff of Renfre w, Donald Farquharson and Arthur Campbell of Admaston. Services were cond ucted by REv Mr Radley, pastor of Renfrew Methodist Church. The late Mr s. Mayhew was born in the township of Admaston, a dau of the late Mr and M rs Rbt Brown in 1870. Her husband survivies her. with one dau and two so ns - Miss Marion at home, Haold R of Renfrew and Joseph E of Glendale, Cal ifornai. There are also brothers and sisters - Rev. 1470 Rev. Hugh J. McAlister and the McAlister family trace their Pentecost heritage to the Argue revivals in Winnipeg in 1907. Having received Spirit-baptism as a young man, Hugh followed in his father John's footsteps and entered Pentecostal ministry. He was ordained in Alberta in 1924 and pastored in Edmonton, Calgary, and Saskatoon. He later moved to Ontario and pastored at St. Thomas, Pembroke, Peterborough, and finally the Stone Church in Toronto. He was District Superintendent for Eastern Ontario and Quebec from 1943-1945 and served on the General Executive of the PAOC. A great leader of the national movement, Hugh was instrumental in bringing Billy Graham to Toronto for a crusade in 1955. A few months later, Hugh died suddenly and unexpectedly. A great Pentecostal preacher, pastor, and father, his passing was a great loss for the fellowship.

of Cobden , passed away peacefully in Caressant Care Nursing Home Cobden, on Thursday May 26, 2016 in his 95th year. Rev. Wesley Mitchell beloved husband of the late Betty Mitchell nee Robinson. Dear father of Lesley ( Blair Taylor ), Mary ( Bert Vancook ), Dan ( Carol ) Mitchell and Keith ( Louise ) Mitchell. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at the Fraser-Morris and Heubner Funeral Home Cobden, at a later date.

REnfrew Mercury Dec 10 1897 The Cobden Sun contains the following regarding trhe death of Mrs Reynold s, of Ross, mother of Mrs E A Stevens, of Toronto, and formerly of Renfre w: On Sunday Nov 21st, Mrsk. John Reynolds, an old and very hgihly respec ted resident of the Twp of Ross passed peacefully away at teh residen ce of her dau Mrs John Fraser. Deceased was in her seventy-ninth year, a nd was always a very healthy woman until a few months ago, when she beg an to fail and rapidly sank until death came. The funeral took place on T uesday afternoon, Nov 23rd to the Methodist Chruch at Forest'er Falls; whe re a very impressive service was said by the pastor, Rev A M Delong, aft er which the interment took place in the Methodist cemetery. The funer al was very largely attended. Deceased leaves a family of five - three da ughters and two sons, one of the latter being J E Reynolds who is a memb er of the Ross Twp Council. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the co mmunity in thier affliction.

From there he went furth er west and had the misfortune to be caught in a snow slide and the repo rt went out that he had been killed. But he had not and in the early da ys of the war he enlisted and went to the front. There he was gassed a nd his sister Mrs. (Rev.)
