Charles R. Lett, Legion Official Dies in Pembroke.

EGANVILLE (Special) - Charles R. Lett, 68, First World War veteran and prominent official of the Canadian Legion, died recently in Pembroke Hospital.

He was born on a Wilberforce farm, son of the late Thomas Lett and Elizabeth Searson. He enlisted in 1915 with the Third Seaforth Highlanders and later served with the 77th Regiment. He was twice wounded, the last time at Vimy Ridge, and was invalided home for hospitalization in Toronto.

After the war he took over the family farm. His first wife, Edith Davis of Rankin, died in 1925. They had one daughter who died in infancy.

In 1929 he married Alice Leech of Wilberforce, who survives.

During the Second World War, he supplied large quantities of meat for the armed forces. He was the first president of the Eganville branch of the Canadian Legion and was Zone Commander of Zone 7. He was the chief promoter of a community centre here and until last year was chairman of the annual winter carnival
Retired Last Year:
Mr. Lett was a commissionaire at Foymount and also at Petawawa Camp until forced by ill health to retire a year ago.

Other survivors are: three sons, Nelson, at home, and Irvin and Norman, both of Schefferville; four daughters, Mrs. Cyril (Barbara) Hinsberger and Mrs. Brian (Beverley) Sterling, both of Eganville, Mrs. Douglas (Betty) Marsh, Long Branch and Bonnie, at home.
Also surviving are a brother, Russell Lett, Edmonton, Alta.; four sisters, Mrs. William Warner, Pembroke, Mrs. Stuart Eady, Whitney, Mrs. Lucy Rogers, Hardisty, Alta., and Mrs. William Sadler, Eganville.

District Commander T. C. Byrne conducted a Legion memorial service with full military honours. Rev. Gavin White and Rev. Lloyd Lake conducted the funeral service in St. John's Anglican Church. Internment was in the parish cemetery.

1435 REnfew Mercury Nov 21 1902 From the Star-Enterprise: A very interesting double marriage ceremony to ok place at St Andrew's Churhc, Scotch Bush, on Wed Oct 29th, at 2 pm in w hich Miss Maggie A Dick was united in marriage to Mr Peter Charles, of t he twp of Alice and her sister, Miss Jennie Dick was united in marria ge to Mr Wm J Thompson, of Douglas. Both bides wore beautiful silk dresse s. The bridesmaids were Miss Lena Dick, sister of the brides, and Miss Ma ggie Dick, dau of mr Peter Dick, while Mr M Welsh and Mr W J Sharp were gr oomsmen. Teh ceremony was performed by the Rev A McKenzie in the presen ce of a very large number of friends. From the church the party dro ve to the home of teh brides' partns where a very sumptuous dinner ws part aken of. 1450 Renfrew Mercury Apr 5 1901 For the past year, Miss Jessie Mayhew, dau of teh late Joseph Mayhew of Ad maston, has been in failing health. With the idea that the change wou ld do her good, she went to Sault Ste Marie, where she resided with her si ster Mrs John Joyce. But the inroads of teh disease, tuberculosis of t eh stomach, were too far advanced for change of climate to effect any cu re and the young lady slowy and painlessly wasted away. The end came on F riday. The body was brought down to Admaston, and the funeral took pla ce form teh home of her brother, Mr John Mayhew to the Admaston cemete ry on Sunday aft, when a large concourse of friends testified their sympat hy for a family which has been bereaved within the last three kyears by t he death of three of teh brohters and sisters - Mrs A Joyce, Joseph and n ow Jessie, the son dying just exactly twelve months after the father. MAYHEW, Jessie M.
