1157 From Retirement Post for Ross Hugli, Sunset Nursery, Sept 2023

Sunset Nursery was established by Harvey Fraser (more affectionately known as ?Mr. Horticulture?) in 1946 who believed that gardeners in Pembroke and the surrounding area wanted and deserved quality plants and expert advice. The original location was at 811 Pembroke Street East (currently Shoppers Drug Mart). Sunset Nursery got its name from the beautiful sunsets that Harvey and his wife Bernice were able to witness from that location before the area was developed into the landscape that we see today.
Harvey Fraser was friends with Ross? parents, and when Ross was 11 years old Harvey asked him if he would like to come and mow the lawn at the nursery. Ross mowed the lawn, and as he tells it ? he never left!
Jay McLaren worked at Sunset Nursery for two summers for Harvey Fraser and after graduating from University and working as a manager at a garden centre in the Toronto area for a few years he returned to the Ottawa Valley and purchased Sunset from Harvey Fraser in 1978.
Since Ross enjoyed his time spent working at Sunset so much, he pursued horticulture programs at both Humber College and the University of Guelph. He joined the Sunset Nursery team on a full time basis after graduating in 1981.
Over the years, Sunset grew in its original location and added on to the existing growing space, but the space began to feel restrictive and didn?t flow as cohesively as they wanted. In 2005, Sunset Nursery moved to its current location at 2177 Greenwood Road where Jay and Ross became co-owners. Ross then became sole owner of Sunset Nursery in 2007.
Bill and Eileen Hugli, founders of Hugli?s Blueberry Ranch (and Ross? parents), had pursued their dream of starting a blueberry farm in our climate right next door to our new location so it only seemed fitting that Ross pursue his dream of growing Sunset Nursery into a state of the art facility on the same land. Today Ross? brother Brian and his wife Judy are the proud owners of Hugli?s Blueberry Ranch and have grown it into the local landmark that it has become.
After settling in at our current location for a few years, we brought in a few racks of women?s clothing to test the waters and they were a somewhat unexpected success! As a result, we added on Karisma fashion boutique which has become a staple for fashion lovers in the Valley year round.
Ross and his wife Cathy have 3 children ? Lisa, Alastair and Charlotte. Ross instilled his strong work ethic and love for what he did in all of his children as they were growing up. As children, they all had the benefit of working at the nursery as their first jobs. Lisa (a.k.a. piano fingers) started filling transplanting trays when she was 9. Alastair and Charlotte also joined the nursery when they were 11 helping with transplanting and filling trays as well.
Over the years Lisa attended Carleton University, lived in Huntsville and dabbled in a few other occupations all the while keeping her toe in at Sunset. In everything she did, her favourite part was working with people. After finishing maternity leave with her second son, she realized that Sunset was the only place that really felt like home and she started working there on a permanent basis.
Alastair, like Ross, had a love for horticulture as well and pursued his education in this area at Humber College and the intensive program at The Niagara Parks School of Horticulture. After graduation, he came back to Pembroke and took over as greenhouse manager at Sunset where he has been able to share his love of horticulture with our customers as well.
Over the last several years, Lisa and Alastair have both had the pleasure of working alongside Ross to learn both the professional and people side of the business. Sunset has always had the philosophy that the customer comes first and we try to instill a feeling of being with family when you shop with us. We have had the benefit of seeing what having a true passion for what you do looks like and hope to continue to share that enthusiasm with our customers in the future.
After so many years of serving the community and building a business that he can be so proud to call his own, Ross is passing the torch to Lisa and Alastair and heading into the retirement that he so deeply deserves.
Our wish is that we will continue to see all of the smiling faces of you, our customers, that we have so enjoyed serving over the years. Our promise is that we will continue to provide you with the level of service and expertise that you have come to expect and enjoy from this place that we all love so much.
And while Ross might be ?retired?, you can be sure that you will still see him around the garden centre from time to time. He might even have a story or two to tell you about a trip he has enjoyed with his new found freedom. He will continue to be our mentor and we feel so honoured that he has given us the privilege of carrying on his legacy for future generations.

Hazel & Harvey were my neighbours when I was growing up. They were retired and aging then and lived at 11 Truelove St. which was Morton St at that time. The vacant lot next to them was also part of their property. Harvey spent a lot of time keeping all his cedar hedges in perfect trim and Hazel was often in her garden with her straw hat on. They were always welcoming to me and I enjoyed visiting them - in the summer when they were out and about, that was most days. They were very kind to this neighbourhood kid and I have very fond memories of them.

Merrill had a great interest in the Bennett and Lewis family history. She shared information & photos from the John Bennett & Caroline Gibbons family line and was a great encourager of mine to produce a Bennett 'book'. Early on she convinced me to created a mini version for her family line before I considered compiling a book. Couldn't say no to Merrill. Always smiling!
