To: Hello: I have just completed a book on Place Names of Temiskaming (soon to be published) andn have the following for Heaslip: HEASLIP Located in Evanturel Township, at the junction of Highways 11 and 624, approximately 5 km. east of Englehart. It was once a stop on the T&NO railway, providing access to the Tomstown and Pense Township areas. A pos t office was established in the private home of Jos. L Heaslip in 1904 and operated until 1958. The hamlet was named for the Heaslip family that settled in this area. Before the great fire of 1922, Heaslip had a Methodist church, community hall, railway station, freight shed, section house, store, and stables as well as a number of homes. The community was almost completely destroyed during the fire; only the community hall was spared, and served as a relief station after the fire. Tragically, this small community suffered the greatest loss of life of any community affected by the fire. Amos Heaslip, his wife and two children were killed, as were Robert Bond, his wife and eight children, and Mrs. Bond's brother. All suffocated when they sought refuge in root cellars. Map No. I hope this helps. If you need more information, let me know, or write th e Englehart and Area Historical Museum in Englehart.
