What we do have for sure is that Lee was discharged from the 99th Regime nt Dec 8 1824, received Land Grant Nov 6, 1832 and received title Apr 16, 1838 (National Archives). Married Flora McDonald in 1817, on 1851 census he was 69 years old, and Fl ora was 65 years old. Edward MCGINNM11IrishO Religion:Church of England James McGinn, a widower aged 80, appears in the 1891 census of Ross Twp. l iving with his nephew George Lee (aged 18) on the property next door to h is son John McGinn. James McGinn was born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland in 180 8. When he was 12 years of age he took out a horse which his father had f orbidden him to ride. The horse was injured when he jumped over a spik ed fence in a graveyard. James was afraid to face his father so he ran aw ay to Londonderry. There he stayed for two years and then stowed aw ay on a boat to Canada. In Canada he commenced working for a landlord in one of the seigneurial st rips along the St. Lawrence River at St. Hubert. He came to Ross Township when he was in his early twenties. After havi ng used French during his stay at St. Hubert he had a hard time learni ng to speak English again. His reason for coming to the Ottawa Valley w as to acquire a hundred acre land grant which the government of Upper Cana da was giving at that time. --by Shirly (McGinn) Wilson , August 1986 The Story of James McGinn As told by Hugh Gilmour McGinn II James McGinn (I believe son of John) came from Enniskillen in the Coun ty of Fermanagh (now in Northern Ireland). His father was a farmer and a horseman (the latter was a trait which follo wed down through the generations). At any rate, the fatehr had a fine sta ble of horses, the pride of which was a white stallion. Young Jim was for bidden to ride this animal. One day his father left for town (?) to get " provisions", which meant a few days journey. As soon as the old man w as well on his way young Jim hopped on the white stallion and went for rid e. A good little horseman himself, he recognized what a fine horse it wa s! He said to himself, "if he is so good, I wonder if he can jumb!" The re was cemetary with an iron picket fence around it. Young Jim tried to j ump the horse over the iron fence - it didn't make it and spiked itse lf in the guts. Now you know how gentle, smiling, fun-loving and even-tem pered are the McGinns - unless they get angry - then they are something el se altogether. The poor little guy; there was no way he would face the wr ath of his father, so he picked himself up off somebody's grave, made h is way to the coast and stowed away on a vessel. When it docked (he had m eanwhile been put to work in the galley) the ship was in Montreal. At this time he was fourteen years old. He was taken in by a french family with whom he lived until he was ninetee n. At that time the Government started giving land grants in Upper Cana da and he acquired 100 acres near Cobden. It is interesting that in the intervening years he had largely lost the fa cility of speaking English and had to learn all over again. He expanded that farm to 475 acres which was and is a sizeable land holdi ng in Ontario. The first house was made of logs and was across the road f rom the present house.
