    The Palatine Family of Andrew YOUNG and Mary LOWE(S) (by David J. Ireton)

    The family of Andrew Young and Mary Lowe(s) settled in the first concession of Stafford Township, Renfrew County, Ontario. The family was previously in Lanark County, Ontario, where marriages of 3 of their children occurred.

    The first documentation on Youngs is from page 142 of "Palatine Families" by H.Z. Jones.
    "Nicol JUNG, aged 21 ,Luth., a carpenter was in the 4th arrivals in England in 1709 (London Lists.) Nichs. YOUNG was head of a German family in Ireland 13JUL1715; on Sept 1720, he was listed with a Henry JUNG on the Southwell Estate near Rathkeale in Co. Limerick (Groves Papers) Nicholas YOUNG was a freeholder at Ballyngarane in July 1747; his probable sons were John and Andrew YOUNG." [1]

    In the churchyard at Nantinan, Co Limerick Ireland, there is a stone for; Mary Crips died 12MAY 1807 age 75 and her husband, John Young died 26 OCT1809 aged 83 years. The stone was erected by their son Andrew. This stone and Andrew Young's stone in Stafford both have the same verse "1st Timothy C2V5.". [2] [3] [8]

    The Crips (Krebs, Kreps) family is also mentioned on page 33 in Irish Palatines [1]

    On April 11 1823, Andrew Young wrote to the Secretary of State for the Colonial Dept in London [4] requesting assistance to immigrate to North America. Reasons given were failure of Farming Interests and extreme danger to members of the established religion. In the letter they say that "cash for property on an average will not amount to more than sixty pounds sterling to each family". The families represented were Andrew Young, wife and eight children Saml Lowes, wife and eleven children George St. (H) John, wife and five children Rob Caswell, wife & three children Robt Eton, wife, no children

    We don't know the name of the ship that brought the Young family to Canada, but in 1823, Andrew and 2 sons, Charles and Richard, were given land in Pakenham Twp., Lanark Co., Ont Lot 2 Con 6. [5]

    24APR1824 Rebecca Young d/o Andrew & Mary married Evan Edwards -Perth Anglican.[6]

    In 1827/8, Andrew YOUNG wrote a series of letters [4] stating that the land in Pakenham was " an entire rock and wholly unfit for cultivation" and requesting relocation to L16 C 8 in Ramsay Twp. Records indicate that they were to be allowed to settle in Ramsay [5], however there is no evidence that they did relocate to Ramsay.

    26th Feb 1835 the Perth Anglican records [6] show two marriages;
    - William Young to Catherine Poff
    - Catherine Young to Peter Poff. (Their daughter Elizabeth was born in Westmeath 22Jun 1837)

    In Dec 1840 and Jan 1842, Andrew Young wrote [4] asking to obtain land which they have already occupied and improved in the township of Westmeath. This was likely the same land which they later obtained in first concession of Stafford. In her book on the history of Stafford Township, Marion Patterson writes "At one time it was a part of the area of Westmeath Township organized in 1830. In 1835 two new townships were carved out of the west side of the very large municipality. They were Stafford and Pembroke Townships"

    In 1846 John Egan received the patent for lots 3.4.5.6.7 and S1/2 8 Concession 1 Stafford [7]. The north 1/2 of lot 8 was granted to Edmund Burritt. In 1849 John Egan sold all his lots to Andrew Young, and in 1856 Burritt sold his lot to Catherine, widow of William Young.
    In 1855 the crown granted S1/2 lot 9 to Andrew Young Sr, for the use and benefit of Robert and Elizabeth Young, children of the deceased William Young. At this time the Young family had 1200 acres in the first concession of Stafford. [7]

    Andrew and Mary Young and 5 of their 8 children are buried in St Patrick's Anglican cemetery in Stafford. One daughter Charlotte is buried with her husband Peter Poff in the Methodist/United Church cemetery adjacent to St Patrick's. Many descendants still live in the area.

    Andrew Young's stone in Stafford states he was born February 2 1765 in Ballengerane, Parish of Nantenane County of Limerick, Ireland came to Canada 1823 - Died March 28 1859 [8] The information on his wife is "Mary Young who depd this life Febry the 22nd 1852 agd 80 yrs" The only documentation I have that Shows Mary's maiden name was Lowe is from the marriage registration of her son Richard to Ann Smith [9] Their children were all born in Ireland. Our records of eight children matches the number in the letter of Apr 11,1823, mentioned above.
